In 2008, the Department of Inventories and Collections was formed. It is responsible for taking care of the Zachęta Collection, and also of all the works of art exhibited in the gallery. It carries out the registration of works, their cataloguing and digitalization, as well as working on the acquisition of new works. The building of the collection is a major part of the gallery’s activity. It is possible thanks to the funds made available by sponsors (such as the ING Foundation of Polish Art which has been supporting the Zachęta collections for 7 years), grants and finances raised by the gallery especially for this purpose (e.g. from revenues raised by the auctioning of works from the collection in 2008), or from donations of works by artists.
One of the department’s main tasks is the loaning of works from the collection to galleries and museums for exhibition in Poland or abroad, a role which leads both to the popularization and promotion of the gallery itself and the artists presented here. Almost annually a new presentation is made of works from the collection (This is not an Exhibition, Pee in a Bun: works from the Collections of the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Summer in the City. An Exhibition Not Just for Children), and works are also included in other exhibitions organized in Zachęta. One of the department’s major tasks is to assure safe conditions for the storage, exhibition and transport of works of art.
Presently, the collection numbers 3600 objects, of which about 700 are paintings, almost 80 video works and nigh on 100 sculptures and installations, as well as a big collection of works on paper (graphic works, drawings and photographs).
We invite any enquires on prior arrangement.
